Sneak preview – Wells Fargo newest blog

Ed over at Wells tipped me off to the newest blog offering from Wells Fargo, that is being announced tomorrow.  They continue to impress me with small steps, yet meaningful steps in the social Internet space.  This new offering is highly relevant to Banking.

The new blog is an industry first.  It is cutely (is that a word) entitled The Student LoanDown.  Its positioned and structured as a genuine conversation to listen and learn, and in turn better support students.  They will be bringing in guest bloggers to help them with that.

I am impressed.  First of all it looks pretty cool, and will go over just fine with the target audience.  Its smart how they have attained a suitable design for the audience, yet worked in the Wells colours.  The topic is ‘a blog about financing college, and managing debt’.

In this blog, our team will give you the lowdown on all things student loan: applying for them, selecting them, repaying them. We’ll guide you through the financial aid process and share our own experiences—both as former students and as Wells Fargo team members.

We’ll talk about the resources you need to prepare and pay for school. We’ll also cover budgeting and debt management strategies because, let’s face it, college keeps getting more expensive.

Wells got some flack for not taking on finance in their first effort, but I think that’s unfair.  At least they are blogging and darned few banks can claim that (here and here).  They have learned from the positive experience with Guided by History, and are ready to go.

I got some additional background from Ed:

Wells Fargo is a leader in education financing, with more than 37 years’ experience.   We originate more than $3.7 billion annually in federal and alternative student loans. We feel it’s a great fit for the blogosphere, from a demographic standpoint certainly, but there’s also a lack of bloggers really tackling this subject.  We think the type of conversations we can start will both inform us about customer needs and help students learn from each other’s experiences. The voices on the blog will be more than our own as we intend over time to include financial aid advisors from universities, parents and students.

On a related note, their other blog Guided by History has evolved from the early experiment coming out of the 100 year anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake, into a permanent blog focussed on the national perspective.

…  focused on general disaster preparedness across the US. Our focus remains on how communities respond to natural disasters, and when possible, link it with historical perspective.
