Here is a tragic set of maps, developed by linked from here and I presume they developed it, but its not clear.
In any event the sheer tragedy is in how easy it is to get “turned around” when you are in the wilderness. I have felt this, and its real.
Look carefully how far the CNET editor walked, went off track, possibly to take advantage of going downhill, or a shortcut, yet to end up so close to where he started. Note the lodge on the map is closed.

A separate note, but the ability of smart people, and online maps to develop this kind of information is truly amazing.
