This is a powerful post from Tara, that I commend to all bloggers, but especially myself.  Its all to easy to fall into the trap of fuelling fires that are out there, as opposed to starting your own fire.

Maybe its time to uninstall “blogthis”, which is precisely what I just used to refer to Tara’s post.   Hmmmm ;  I sense a New Years resolution coming on!  I too often fall into the trap of linking to a post and using that as a catalyst for a thought meme that I have been fermenting, but why start that way.

One day I woke up and realized that I wasn’t adding much more to the conversation. I could still scan Techmeme and Tailrank to find out what people were talking about, but it was about time that I actually start creating solid content of my own.

What do you think about this, and the impact on blogging generally?

  1. I’m really bad for this. Working full time and working on an MBA at night doesn’t leave a lot of time for original thought and/or blogging.

However, I think this tendency pretty much lines up with how people act on individual blogs: 1-2% actually contribute something new, a few more comment and the rest just read. “Echo” blogs are just commenters one site removed; most of us are just reading.

  2. And that makes sense … fits with the “1%er rule” … that being the group that edit wikis, etc.
