Neil Young, Live At Massey Hall, 1971

Just got around to downloading this tonight from itunes.  Good grief – its eerie to hear him shift from ‘Maid’ into “Heart of Gold” with zero audience reaction;  its too new – they hadn’t heard it yet!

This is a must listen for any Neil Young fan

Here is Ohio live:  I didn’t even catch him live till ’76 – 5 years later – wow!

  1. My favourite Neil Young moment was when he sang “Helpless” at The Band’s last concert (immortalized, of course, in Martin Scorsese’s brilliant The Last Waltz). Neil Young singing alongside The Band, with Joni Mitchell on backing vocals…it doesn’t get much more Canadian than that.

Granted, I didn’t experience this at the time; I was one year old when The Band broke up. But that’s why CDs and DVDs were invented.

  2. Great comment Dan …. my favourite comment in this show is when Neil talks about his new Ranch (he’s 24) and this old foreman who, “comes with the place when you buy it” – hence “Old Man”.

Also Ohio is particularly poignant, Kent State having just happened May 4th, 1970, – less than 8 months earlier.
