Mark Carney is a well respected professional who has held positions as Governor of the Bank of Canada, and Bank of England. He was advisor to the UK government for COP26.
His opinion counts and article he published in the Globe and Mail is worth reading.
This opinion piece should be read in context of the comparison between Toronto and Ottawa this past weekend.
- Toronto – a superb example of professional policing, including crowd management and working with the demonstrators and institution of rules and guidelines.
- Ottawa – chaos. Trucks honking (100 decibels), blocked roads interference and threatening behaviour against local residents.
The origins of the Toronto and Ottawa demonstrations are common. A group of truckers originated in western Canada. There are open questions on the source of this seditions belabour culminating in the GoFundMe campaign which has since been shut down and the woman behind the campaign has disappeared.
So we are left with demonstrations in Toronto and Ottawa over the weekend and the result is clear.
Toronto – success
Ottawa – failure
Canadian politicians have picked up on the message and turned it around and into their own messaging which is scary reminiscent of the US break up and polarisation of the Republicans.
Carney’s message is clear:
- Follow the money, within Canada and from foreign sources.
- Planning; prepare, maintain and execute proper emergency plans that rise above politics.
