Donald Trump to announce up to $500bn for Stargate AI project

The initial investment of $100bn for an advanced data centre is set to climb as the world’s biggest tech investors, including Sam Altman and Larry Ellison, get involved

President Trump is set to announce plans for investment worth hundreds of billions of dollars in America’s artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The funding, which could climb to $500 billion, will be part of a joint venture by some of the world’s biggest technology investors, including OpenAI and Oracle.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, and Larry Ellison, the chairman of Oracle, were due at the White House on Tuesday evening for the announcement by President Trump on his first full day back in office.

The new venture, to be called Stargate, will initially receive $100 billion to build an AI data centre. SoftBank, a Japanese investment firm, is also expected to be part of the Texas-based project.

SoftBank pledged to invest $100 billion in the US after Trump’s election victory in November. It is not clear if the capital committed to Stargate on Tuesday was part of those plans. Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s chief executive, said the investments
