Paving the cowpath – otherwise known as US payments

The future of payments is certainly not a straight line to some kind of electronic, seamless, card or phone based system;  not by a long shot, certainly in the US where cheques (checks) rule.  However the clearing method has gone electronic with the acceptance of image based depositing. Recent and Long-Term Payment Trends in the United States: 2003 – 2012 | FRB Paper check writing continues to persist as a significant portion of noncash payments, but interbank processing and clearing of these checks are virtually all electronic. As in 2009, almost all checks in 2012 were either cleared by electronic … Continue reading Paving the cowpath – otherwise known as US payments

Venturebeat reviews a report on mobile technology platforms.  The big news is that html5 has dropped in favour of faster native app platforms with Javascript the biggest gainer.  Objective C which was popular in the beginning is dropping in favour. Bitcoin is an asset class, not a currency

I think there is a lot of confused thinking about Bitcoin.  I believe today it is an asset and not a currency.  That view is supported by first Germany, and now Norway. It is admirable that many get excited about the potential for an ecommerce medium of exchange that is secure but lets dig behind the hype. First of Ben Bernanke was quoted as suggesting it and other virtual currencies “may hold long term promise”.  Next the BofA report on Bitcoin was taken by many as the herald of the future of eCommerce. However the hype overtook the content of … Continue reading Bitcoin is an asset class, not a currency

Yahoo email redesign being lost in serious outages for users

I don’t know what everyone is complaining about the new yahoo mail design.  I have had an account for years that went into disuse when gmail appeared, however this latest design finally puts it on a par with gmail in terms of interface. It is minimalist, but rich in function and very fast.  In fact so much so there are times it downright feels like gmail.  However the big story here is how good and positive app changes can get lost in bad rollout strategies.  Yahoo recently placed Jeff Bonforte of Xobni in charge of Yahoo Mail.  Yahoo recently bought … Continue reading Yahoo email redesign being lost in serious outages for users

Memo to NSA – this is no longer 1981

This is interesting.  NSA is using a 1981 Presidential order to justify mobile phone surveillance. NSA cites Reagan-era executive order to justify collection of cell-phone location data The National Security Agency on Friday cited a 1981 executive order signed by then-President Ronald Reagan as the authority under which it is collecting location data daily from tens of millions of cell phones around the world. However this little statistic makes that claim questionable at best. The mobile phone has a longer history than many might think. 30 years ago, on 10 November 1981, NMT – Nordic Mobile Telephone – the world’s … Continue reading Memo to NSA – this is no longer 1981

The challenge between perfect technology architecture and fast shifting customer channels

There is a lesson here for Banks.  In 2012 just over a year ago, FaceBook went public.  At the time the largest doubt was FaceBooks ability to leverage advertising in the mobile space. Since then FaceBook has turned that corner.  It has done that by making mobile important. But how did FaceBook accomplish this and how did they accomplish this in just over a year. How Facebook Went Mobile, In Before And After Org Charts Facebook used to be a website translated to mobile by a tiny team, but over the last two years it’s reorganized to make every department … Continue reading The challenge between perfect technology architecture and fast shifting customer channels

iBeacons Used To Deliver Location-Based Access To iOS Newsstand Publications

In September I wrote about iBeacon in iPhone and the potential for payments.  Now a real world application for iBeacon has appeared in London. iBeacon is a low power using medium rage Bluetooth service. This new use delivers relevant magazines from the Apple Newstand while at a soccer pub in London.  It demonstrates that iBeacon uses are just getting off the ground and may have even more interesting potential uses. iBeacons Used To Deliver Location-Based Access To iOS Newsstand Publications “As this is very much new technology we are showcasing it for the first time at Bar Kick in Shoreditch, … Continue reading iBeacons Used To Deliver Location-Based Access To iOS Newsstand Publications

Honda integrates iPhone w/ 2014 Civic touchscreen in first steps towards iOS in the Car

Wearable computing such as a watch with mobile apps are generally considered the next big thing.  Quietly, vehicle internet integration is right behind and may well be as big in my view.  I am a fan of German cars, and enjoyed GPS and stolen car location for some time.  However the internet smart car revolution is growing very rapidly and its not just German cars anymore. This from Honda is very cool.  Obvious advantages are music and maps.  Think your itunes match being readily available on the car screen. Honda integrates iPhone w/ 2014 Civic touchscreen in first steps towards … Continue reading Honda integrates iPhone w/ 2014 Civic touchscreen in first steps towards iOS in the Car

Google’s way of pushing the limits of the Web as a platform

The tools and platforms available today are expanding rapidly.  So rapidly that it is very hard to keep up. All the more reason that banks, at least all big banks, should have innovation centres that are solely focussed on pushing the envelope with this stuff.  We need to understand what this means and where the opportunities lie for transactional banking. This geeky article basically says that Google will produce Microsoft Office type functionality in an app that will work on your mobile device or your laptop.  The inference being that the files are stored in the cloud and are accessible … Continue reading Google’s way of pushing the limits of the Web as a platform

RBS sufferred another crash of their computer systems resulting in customers having no access to debit and credit card systems on Monday.  They are the only bank I am aware has their own wikipedia page devoted to their system problems. This latest crash was similar to June 2012 when millions were left without access to their money.
