Not so social as we might think?

Interesting report from PEW last week on the methods used within social networks to maintain privacy.  There is some thought applied, and care taken, to manage the risks.  The majority of teens actively manage their online profiles to keep the information they believe is most sensitive away from the unwanted gaze of strangers, parents and other adults. While many teens post their first name and photos on their profiles, they rarely post information on public profiles they believe would help strangers actually locate them such as their full name, home phone number or cell phone number. Banque 2.0 – why its an effective model for Banking

Nicolas analyses the idea of Banking business models with Community as a base.  What I found interesting is how he pulls out the distinctions in Zopa and Prosper as different but effective community models. hat tip Jean Christophe  J’en tire pour conclusion qu’il existe deux modèles de Banque 2.0 : – Modèle “Top down” : Le portage du modèle de la banque dans le mode de fonctionnement des communautés. – Modèle “Bottom up” : L’extension à l’ensemble des communautés d’un modèle d’intermediation monétaire inter-personnel. Google translation I draw some for conclusion which there are two models of Bank 2.0: – … Continue reading Banque 2.0 – why its an effective model for Banking

Dana Boyd speaks about relevance and social networks

Dana specialises on Social Networks.  Her talk at eTech is summarised here at Raph Kosters site.  Good insight here. Social networks are the issue de jour, but she does a nice job at isolating the views of different generations, which in turn talks to the relevance of social networks. the question is what people care about. Family, friends, religion, labor, etc. It shifts over time. 1. friends, attention, play, sex, consumption2. sex, friends, money, play, labor3. labor family money power property4. family, health, religion, hobbies, friends For example, its easy to see why stage 3 and 4 people would be active … Continue reading Dana Boyd speaks about relevance and social networks

Vancity proves that the entire organisation is behind their social web initiatives

Thanks to Trey for pointing out this web 2.0’ish response from Vancity … a Credit Union, but still a financial institution.  This kind of response from a Corporate Communications group of an FI makes me dive for the Kleenex.  Its brilliant, heartfelt, and real.  Here is a summary of what caught my attention, but click through to Trey’s post … trust me its worth it.  I will use this at NetFinance2007!  Which Bank could have done this?  I never thought I would hear the day an FI would publicly use the word Technorati!!!!! Blogging is a real challenge for us folks over here … Continue reading Vancity proves that the entire organisation is behind their social web initiatives

Flickr – lessons in community development

This is a great object lesson in community development by experts at Flickr. We very carefully built the community on Flickr, person by person. The team and I greeted every single person who arrived, introduced them around, hung out in the chatrooms. It was a very hands-on process, building the community. And in the beginning Flickr was built side-by-side with feedback from the community: We were posting over 50 times a day in the forums. After you hit, say 10,000 members, or so, hopefully you’ve created a strong enough culture that people are greeting each other. It really is kind … Continue reading Flickr – lessons in community development

Social software · War for talent, corporate culture and social software · Shaping Thoughts

Some interesting notes from Marcel on the internal workings within ABN Amro.  Internal research on the corporate culture has shown that employees are afraid to speak up, fearing management backlash and impacting ones’ career. ABN AMRO management thinks that in order to remain competitive it needs a more open culture in which people feel comfortable to give feedback and provide idea’s for improvement. Source: Social software · War for talent, corporate culture and social software · Shaping Thoughts Its bizarre story including a fake guru, who wormed his way into the Bank to help them address their problem. Anyhow, Marcel asks the … Continue reading Social software · War for talent, corporate culture and social software · Shaping Thoughts

BBC approach to Enterprise 2.0

I love this mini-manifesto from the Beeb describing their approach to social media internally with a view to improving the organisation. DO NOTHING GET OUT OF THE WAY and KEEP THE ENERGY LEVELS UP Source: Wiki and Social Media roundup I especially like this quote: His argument is that it’s going to happen in your organisation anyway, so ….   Technorati tags: social+networks, BBC Continue reading BBC approach to Enterprise 2.0

Wesabe – brief review of their ‘goals’ and ‘tips’ section

I am trying to keep up with evolution of social aspects of sites, and in particular financial one, so I spent a little while looking around Wesabe again today.  The social aspect is designed around goals and tips.  Goals You can create your own goal, or you can read others goals, and search for one that matches what you seek.  These are the most popular goals. What immediately struck me is the normal, and quite predictable nature of these goals.  People are genuinely seeking advice from others who have been there, or still there, and working through it.  Its interesting … Continue reading Wesabe – brief review of their ‘goals’ and ‘tips’ section

If I were a Banker …. a view from France

The always intelligent blog of Jean-Christophe posts a provocative view of Banking evolution. While the Mutual Credit launches an advertising campaign where it asks its customers what they would do if they were bankers, the bank of tomorrow is already moving& elsewhere Source: Translated version of http://capelli.typepad.fr/capelli/2007/03/si_jtais_banqui.html The English translation, courtesy of Google is here. Even with the rough translation, I like this point, that is fundamental to the success of social integration with real business – transparency and yet confidentiality.  Note I had to add some prepositions to make it closer to the French original: New tendency of Web 2.0 … Continue reading If I were a Banker …. a view from France

Wonderful description of Wikipedia – clues to the future

Henry Jenkins has posted his notes to remarks at the Beyond Broadcast conference.  This is a wonderful description of Wikipedia, and the convergence of forces that creates something brand new which could not have existed before.  This is the real power in the social net, where business models are formed in ways that could not have otherwise occurred. Wikipedia has developed strong ethical standards that enable people with wildly divergent beliefs to work together towards a common project; they focus on the shared infrastructure that they all need in order to achieve their aims rather than on the individual points … Continue reading Wonderful description of Wikipedia – clues to the future
