Web 2.0 companies, versus poor old Banks

Imagine my glee this morning when I came across two of my favourite bloggers agreeing on something where I totally disagree! [disclosure;  I have a vested interest in the subject matter – more on that later] James says: In fact, as far as I can tell, the difference between a web financial services company that is driven to get profits by shareholders and a bank that is driven to get profits by shareholders is practically nil. Source:  Bankervision And Ron picks up on the topic, bringing in the Credit Unions: Bottom line: CUs can’t rely on messaging and positioning statements … Continue reading Web 2.0 companies, versus poor old Banks

Rethink from Unspace

I wanted to introduce this new blog from Unspace, a Ruby on Rails shop in Toronto, that are probably one of the best in North America. They happen to be working [disclosure] on a project I am involved in (more very, very soon) and I am genuinely impressed with their approach and work. I’ve said it before.  I would love to see someone rebuild online banking in Rails.  The cost, and development timeline is exponentially different than C++, and the result is something designed for the web.   Technorati tags: ruby+on+rails, unspace Continue reading Rethink from Unspace

Social media overload – twitter.com

Scoble continues to lead the charge, by adding all the twitter users to his list.  Twitter is one of those incredibly annoying things, yet, it is starting to originate comments about things that don’t show up in blogs. Well, I’m not overloaded enough, so today I’m adding all 719 of my Twitter followers as friends which means my home page is fast and furious. Why do that? So I can listen in on 719 of the world’s early adopters Source: Social media overload « Scobleizer – Tech Geek Blogger   Technorati tags: twitter Continue reading Social media overload – twitter.com

Making Windows Vista Sing: Robert Fripp and the Vista Melody

No commentary required.  Just page down, and select ‘watch’.  If you appreciate music you will appreciate this genius at work. On May 4th, 2006, Steve Ball invited Robert Fripp back to the Microsoft campus for a second full day of work on Windows Vista following up on his first visit in the Fall of 2005. Feed stats – Google enters the mix finally

I literally haven’t the slightest idea how many people read my blog using RSS feeds.  WordPress are trying hard to extrapolate the number, but it is so dynamic right now.  My little blog is just trying to do its thing, but the Banker in me really wants consistent stats.  This is a shortfall right now.  Graph shown is RSS feed readership according to WordPress. The good news is that Google is in typical style, gradually getting better at integrating their information.   Technorati tags: google, google+reader, rss+feeds Continue reading Feed stats – Google enters the mix finally

QR codes – we have lots to learn

QR codes are the hottest thing since sliced bread in Japan.  Ignore the kanji here, and follow the pictures.  Scan the QR code from a poster, or web site (2), and that loads the web page in your phone browser (3).  From there you can navigate within the site (4). This solves one of the chronic problems for phones … typing in the http address.  The marketing opportunities are huge.  There is room for 7000+ data elements in the QR code, and phone numbers, websites, and contact information are easy. The phone reads QR through the infra red port built … Continue reading QR codes – we have lots to learn

Google goes after Small Business with Office Application

We’ve talked about web based applications here before.  Well its now an official reality. Its free until April.  It appears to be based on the familiar docs and spreadsheets link from your Gmail page. Google Apps Premier Edition, to be unveiled Thursday, features online e-mail, calendaring, messaging and talk applications as well as a word processor and a spreadsheet. The launch follows Google’s introduction of a similar suite aimed at consumers last August. The new Premier Edition, however, offers enhancements aimed squarely at corporate environments. ING introduces OurVirtualHolland within Second Life

ING have just introduced a plan to build out a significant presence within Second Life.  They have a regular site and a blog to support it.  (update:  their blog has no feed – I presume that’s an oversight that will be addressed). I especially like their approach.  Its a simple fact that virtual reality has different levels of accomplishment so far by different participants as Second Life evolves, so the grass roots approach should work well. Hat tip to Marcel for this announcement yesterday.  Read his blog post for detailed background, from someone involved.  He notes ING want to learn and … Continue reading ING introduces OurVirtualHolland within Second Life
