Recession, recession, recession -2022

We are hearing so much fission on recession with journalists pressing for agreement we are in recession, while economists basically say it is not that simple. First off no-one indicates the relevance of whether we are in one. What matters is the impact on you. The facts are that it is not simple and have more to do with the impact on people, and groups of people. The 2009 view Here is a post I did in 2009. It references some of the complication caused by demographic positioning and cohorts financial standing. Here is a post from 2009 referencing a … Continue reading Recession, recession, recession -2022

Tracking the Rogers Jul 8th network failure – 2nd update

Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri faced a Government of Canada team to answer questions about the network failure Jul 8th. There are four major points he made with sub bullets from me. Working toward a formal agreement between carriers to switch 911 calls to each other’s networks automatically My main observation here is that does not improve reliability of Rogers service. The logistics to ensure such a failover works will not be easy. Second, Rogers will set a higher standard for reliability by physically separating our wireless and internet services to create an ‘always on’ network Words matter: The concept ‘always … Continue reading Tracking the Rogers Jul 8th network failure – 2nd update

How should we deal with the Rogers outage

Rogers have experienced two major outages over the last 18 months. When a few of us signed up for internet in the 90’s it was fun, exciting and cutting edge. The idea that I could bypass the middleman and gain access to information directly was breathtaking. During the mid 90’s we were able to sign into our bank, see our accounts and pay bills. This was during a time that Tellers and ATM’s defined Bank access for customers. I was with BMO and part of the transition building online banking and leading the shift. Shift from simple access to regulated … Continue reading How should we deal with the Rogers outage

No place for racism in Formula 1

This week se have seen Nelson Piquet, an otherwise well respected F1 driver and winner of three world championships, make racist references about Lewis Hamilton. Lewis is a long time F1 champion and arguably one of the best ever with seven world championships. The final race of 2021 saw some controversial activity when the race judges made calls that resulted in other divers winning the GP and the Championship, and Nelsons comments followed. Nelsons daughter is dating the driver who won. I can only speculate what his motivation for the comments he made on Lewis but he is old enough … Continue reading No place for racism in Formula 1

It is time to start holding Blockchain proponents to account

More and more we are hearing promises and vision statements from Blockchain and more particularly Bitcoin people including Jack Mallers, CEO Strike. These promises centre on the notion that Blockchain offers safety from government and regulation which is held out as inherently bad. Then Bitcoin proponents hold out the apparent safety of a digital currency that permits frictionless money movement with no risk. And lets make sure we are using the same language and nomenclature. I put Wikipedia at the foot. A false promise These promises are false and remind me of the 1992 – 1995 period when internet was held out … Continue reading It is time to start holding Blockchain proponents to account

The new concern about world food shortages

We are seeing references to global good shortages predominantly from the United Nations. It is an unfortunate fact we are used to hiring of such concerns in 3rd world areas, but a global food shortage suggests something new. I looked into it and uncovered some new issues. This in the context of other big concerns for Global warming and shift to alternative power solutions, COVID and the Russian attack on Ukraine. Is there really another concern? This is the question I decided to ask and here follows some research I uncovered. I read it that there is risk but that … Continue reading The new concern about world food shortages

Identity and technological implications – who am I?

Identity, Digital identity and payments are becoming conflated. There is success in the evolution of Apply Pay and like systems which provide assurance to to the payee (receiver of money) that the payor (sender of money) has a strong association with the money source. The payor has documented ownership of the cash, credit card or debit card. The receiver of money can legitimately rely on the money ownership as if the payor were holding the physical credit card as in buying something in a physical location 30 years ago. I will focus here on the Apple Pay example. This association … Continue reading Identity and technological implications – who am I?
