Maybe Microsoft is changing, but, maybe we are the problem?

This comment late in the article is refreshingly positive about Microsoft.  Its a positive step that they are suggesting a break from old methods that date back many years.  I have sat through requirements sessions that listened to people indicating a need to retain access to Microsoft Mail files.  Folks … time to cut the cord.  The corporate costs are in the billions, when you factor in what Microsoft must do to maintain backward compatibility, not to mention the gyrations your Bank must go through, its just not worth it.  Save those old emails as text for legal storage, and move … Continue reading Maybe Microsoft is changing, but, maybe we are the problem?

Things Sir Tim Berners-Lee is excited about internet

Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the web in 1991. He regards Web 2.0 as pretty basic and part of the evolution he expected, that the web would be two way and provide for user generated content.   …  but he is more excited by other things Although he is somewhat sceptical of the hype around Web 2.0, Sir Tim is excited by three other areas of the web’s development: its spread to millions of new users via mobile devices, the growing interest in the technology’s social and political impact and the semantic web, in which information is labelled so that it makes … Continue reading Things Sir Tim Berners-Lee is excited about internet

The 50 Most Important People on the Web

PC World produces a great list of the top influential people on the web.  Its a great list, and its particularly good to see people like Scoble, and Matt of WordPress.  Enjoy! We considered hundreds of the Web’s most noteworthy power brokers, bloggers, brainiacs, and entrepreneurs to figure out whose contributions are shaping the way we use the Web. We whittled the list down to the top 50–well, actually the top 62–people, but as you’ll see, there are some you just can’t separate. Source: The 50 Most Important People on the Web – Yahoo! Congrats to Jungle Disk on their upgrade in conjunction with Amazon S3

Totally off topic, but I have to congratulate Jungledisk on this upgrade.  I have been using their web service for a while now, and it performs impeccably.  Result – I have a complete nightly back up of ‘my documents’ for about $15 per annum (6 gig’s including My Music 4 gigs, and files 2 gigs).  It works as an incremental back up so only takes a few minutes, scheduled at 4am. This upgrade is amazing … the first sentence is mind blowing. To enable fast file renaming and copying, we’ve placed servers in Amazon.com datacenters using their EC2 service. When you need to … Continue reading Congrats to Jungle Disk on their upgrade in conjunction with Amazon S3

Credit Mutuel – internet banking portal – AJAX

I bumped into Yann from Credit Mutuel while at LIFT.  He pointed out their banking portal work that is underway.  Check it out. Link to Accueil (Link removed – beta site, and will change) Note these things; drag and drop sections open and close stories Click personalise and note the page dims, and the customise bar opens And all of this is super fast.  It is all downloaded and run locally.  This is the first bank Ajax implementation I have seen.   Technorati tags: Credit+Mutuel, France, Ajax+online+banking, online+banking Continue reading Credit Mutuel – internet banking portal – AJAX

Banks should pay attention to Wikipedia

iContract point out the lack of attention to Wikipedia for Banks is contributing to a view they might regret.  For example, Citi and Enron. Link to Banking Newsletter Some examples I came across, that are not how those institutions would prefer to be positioned: Barclays Bank:  Legal action dating from the ’70s in Africa Bank of Montreal:  “Each of the client groups operates under multiple brand names” Bank of America:  In 2004, a California jury decided that Bank of America had illegally raided the Social Security benefits of a million customers. Wells Fargo:  reads well – talks about the vision … Continue reading Banks should pay attention to Wikipedia

How to web 2.0 your bank – (follow up to a comment)

Portaleco (Germany) makes an interesting comment to a post from last October that I felt worth capturing and noting here.  It brings home to me that we are all to a certain extent cocooned by our environments, as much as the web is world wide. The philosophical differences between the big continents remain, and provide a different lens for each of us, and how we see things. So while I don’t full agree with the comment, I accept that we don’t all see the same things, the same way, and that strategies may need to be refined and regionalised to some … Continue reading How to web 2.0 your bank – (follow up to a comment)

Founder of Wikipedia plans search engine – Wikiasari

In what will generate enormous controversy, Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia intends to create a search tool using the open source approach that he used to develop Wikipedia. This will have consequences for how people locate banks, and financial information.  It will eliminate SEO, as a concept and as a function.  I like the concept, that would lever the 1% ‘rs.  This would be social search, as compared to algorithmic search. The downside will be the inevitable attempts to pollute with skewed commercial interest.  Should prove interesting.  He is working with Amazon on this. UPDATE: according to their site Amazon are not … Continue reading Founder of Wikipedia plans search engine – Wikiasari
