A powerful view of the extent of reliance on consumer debt in UK, and the US numbers will be at least as big relative to the economy. Thousands to have usual credit lines cut off – Times Online Almost 600,000 people will be unable to refinance their debts this year after finding their usual lines of credit cut off, forcing them to go bust or sign expensive “bankruptcy-lite” agreements. Exactly who is running the show?

I rarely if ever do this, out of respect for my subscription to FT, however here is one of these occasions, and I hope they don’t mind. I am just a blogger, but I have been blogging consistently since March 07 about how the sub prime crisis will change everything in banking, and in the economy. For the full list see here. Its scary how long this has been a topic on this blog! That leads into …. I have never met Gordon Brown, but there are (at least) three thoughts that leap out at me from this FT piece, … Continue reading Exactly who is running the show?

Carbon neutrality for Banks and Credit Unions is a hard question

Banks and Credit Unions are getting all green over the last two years, and it risks becoming a fad. I was surprised to see VanCity, whom I respect using what appears to be shadow accounting to accomodate a claim of carbon neutrality. I have to call VanCity out on this one. Using a ‘Social Audit’ they have calculated their degree of carbon usage. No problem there. In order to become carbon neutral, they have purchased ‘offsets from five alternative energy projects’. Huh? Vancity – Carbon Offsets Vancity carbon neutral offsets After all of this prep work, the time came for … Continue reading Carbon neutrality for Banks and Credit Unions is a hard question

Visa category killer | “no signature required”

Till now this service has been reserved for airports in Canada, so its nice to hear that its being rolled out generally. While Banks here debate how to implement pin free debit or smart card electronic purse, this Visa product is a category killer in my view. Its simple fast and convenient, and only one receipt for customers, unlike the two ‘would you like those stapled together’ receipt dance that accompanies debit. RBC p2p – the latest RBC p2p stuff Well, in any case the Visa no signature required program is here in Canada and so now when you go … Continue reading Visa category killer | “no signature required”
