Who is moving fastest – Universities, or corporate?

Phil expresses some frustration about campuses and their totalitarian attempts to control users, and how perhaps corporate’s will become more open.  That said, with changing business culture, corporate networks are probably going to become more like campus networks than the other way around Source: Phil Windley’s Technometria | Conflicting Roles and the Use of Tor In my experience and speaking to others, I have to say I see no sign, or even light on the horizon for Banks to open up their networks.   Technorati tags: bank+networks, cluetrain, networked+employees Continue reading Who is moving fastest – Universities, or corporate?

LIFT07 – thoughts and relevance to Banking

LIFT07 is over, and its hard to imagine.  Laurent did a superb job of not orchestrating what people should talk about.  The approach was open, and very engaging.  The chatter was non stop.  The presentations, and panels, were just plain thought provoking.  Scoble makes a couple of great points.  Who needs vendor booths at conferences.  They all have web sites. At LIFT some obscure and different people, we or at least I would never have otherwise seen.  Sampo Karjalainen speaking about Habbo.  I’ll bet few North Americans have heard of them.  Habbo has 7.5 million active users.  Think Second Life in … Continue reading LIFT07 – thoughts and relevance to Banking

P2PVenture : MeetingMinutes-2007-02-03

BarCampBank3  met in Paris last weekend, and unfortunately I could not attend.  Tom Purves from Toronto was there and made a difference.  We had a founding session of the P2PVenture project within BarCamp:BarCampBank3. The session gathered more than 15 people and we had a lively discussion on the targets, regulation and mechanism to build and operate a platform to match enterprise projects / startups investment needs and distributed investment capacities. Source: P2PVenture : MeetingMinutes-2007-02-03 Its exciting that BarCampBank has settled on P2P lending as a topic – P2PVenture.  This is a good one to tag, and keep up with, for … Continue reading P2PVenture : MeetingMinutes-2007-02-03

LIFT07 – Bankers can be bloggers too

I used the title mainly to get attention. The sub message was that its not sustainable for Banks to continue with online Banking as a simple automation of services application. They must address the social aspect, and learn how to work with that environment. I used examples of; – Verity CU – Wells Fargo – Vancity – UFirst CU As examples of bank disrupters, I focussed on Wesabe, Prosper, Zopa, FYGO, and CircleLending. Actual deck attached here. LIFT 07 – banks are handicapped by perceptions

I’m still reflecting on Lee’s (Headshift.com) presentation yesterday. Quote Wasting brainpower in large orgs – turning people into idiots /Quote He captured how large organisations manage work in a way that contradicts how people think. This makes it hard to absorb new patterns and concepts. A brilliant example of that is Web 2.0, and associated concepts; – simple – incremental change – start small – focus on core, and build out & tools; – blogs – wikis – tagging – feeds – feed aggregation, clipstreams – social networks In aggregate each of the above are powerful, but where to start, … Continue reading LIFT 07 – banks are handicapped by perceptions

LIFT07 – Innovation

I’m surprised and happy to see so many bankers/ banking technology people here. Some snippets that I’ve picked up, all European, and that I’ll be speaking about in more detail; – evault to store electronic docs in online banking – consideration of Ruby on Rails for online banking – a blog to follow an Antarctic expedition hosted by a Bank – an information management system on rails, that’s designed as a multi user, tagging, personal home page environment. A cross between blogs, facebook, and google reader ; this rocks! – general thread to implement social x on a bank site … Continue reading LIFT07 – Innovation

LIFT07 – Lee Bryant – headshift.com

Every Banks should listen to Lee. His basic premise; there is wasted brainpower in large corporations. Its turning people into idiots. Some notes; – IT syhstems don’t understand how people work. – people work and think in terms of pattern matching – organisations work linearly with tools like Outlook and sharepoint. – his example – you are in Africa; you see a lion – do you review a database for matching items, yellow blogn sharp teeth, large mane – no you run like hell. That’s because of instant pattern matching. – IT worries about 70% of costs going to storage … Continue reading LIFT07 – Lee Bryant – headshift.com

LIFT 07 – Day 2 – Conference day

Laurent Haug is opening the first main conference day. 550 attendees from 30 countries. 1st Speaker; Florence Devouard, Cahirman of the Board, Wikimedia Foundation. – 727 Million internet users in the world – Wikipedia is 6th with 155 M. Top 5 are Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, ebay, and Time. Principles; – collect local, collect global. – Manipulate huge amounts of data – Reactivity Florence sees 4 global trends; – virtually unlimited space – nurturing a critical mind – empowering people – A priori trust – opening the gates rather than closing them. That last point is harder fro Europeans. 2007 – … Continue reading LIFT 07 – Day 2 – Conference day

LIFT 07 Day 1

Day 1 was a workshop day. I participated in one facilitated by Dave Cockbane, a Prof from Stanford, and Nicolas Nova. Subject was “Designing the Future Cities”. It was quite fascinating, and I learned some new tools for thinking through really hard, new problems, and I can use on this blog. Themes that came out in the workshop regarding future cities; – Population Density – Virtual reality – Integration of virtual and real in peoples lives – Population aging – Population Diversity – Co-working – Virtual ownership/ renting everything – Fee based lifestyle Highly thought proving day. The evolution of … Continue reading LIFT 07 Day 1
