This is just a fantastic post from Matt (WordPress) that is a clarion call to the Sun, Microsoft, Oracle, group of old guys who really need to get with the programme, or they will be gone. I’ve given up, I’ve lost hope, and our business has moved on. We’re growing fast and adding infrastructure faster, all on a tight budget, and I’m less inclined to depart from the LAMP-based architecture that Digg, Flickr, Wikipedia, and dozens of other sites I respect use. Personally I’m far more excited about what Amazon is doing these days. Source: Photo Matt » Sun Isn’t … Continue reading Photo Matt » Sun Isn’t Relevant to Startups

CIBC Loses 470,000 Private Client Files

Poor old CIBC just keeps getting nailed with this stuff.  A couple of years ago it was a long stream of faxes containing customer data going consistently to a private company, and now this. CIBC is the latest major company to lose sensitive customer data, making 470,000 clients vulnerable to dreaded identity theft. The bank announced Thursday that a file being transported between Montreal and Toronto went missing while in transit. /Message: Enough Already: Getting Social Media All Wrong

Stowe does an admirable job here of summarising the state of denial that otherwise smart people are existing within. As Jay Rosen has suggested, we are the people formerly known as the audience. Blogging is not just another channel for corporate marketing types to push their messages to markets, eyeballs, or audiences. Social media is based on the dynamic of a many-to-many dialogue between people. Yes, people: that’s the word that should have been used. Not audience. Focusing on high-end consumers may not always pay | Javelin

I echo Jeans point here, based on experience that I have watched with Banks misguided attempts in this approach.  It usually stems from some internal research that proves the usual stuff about 80% of profits emanating from 20% of customers.  In fact its often more like 95/5. Recently UnionBanCal announced that they were moving away from pursuing a broad consumer base in order to go after more high-end, profitable clients and small businesses (American Banker, January 9, 2007). However, I have my doubts that shrinking the retail base will actually help UnionBanCal grow its deposits. The Longtail of Banking

Phil’s article touches on several of the unspoken secrets of Banking that (today) ensures traditional banking drills down into the apparent secret sauce of wealth management for the few, yet leaves untapped the mass group that are sometimes characterised as ‘unbanked’ who represent significant opportunity. Why?  The average bank will tell you behind closed doors that the ‘average’ annual profit per customer is in the range of $10.  This is the classic average with the lower end being a loss.  If you can add in a group such as unbanked at positive profit, you are basically off to the races.  … Continue reading The Longtail of Banking

Waybackmachine: great research tool

For those bloggers, or readers performing research this tool that I only came across today, is quite remarkable, and could have saved me time in past research. Waybackmachine holds archived copies of web pages back to the 90’s.  I was amazed (and embarrassed … at the quality) to find stuff I worked on from 96. Its also useful to find earlier editions of pages that have been since edited.   Technorati tags: web+archive, waybackmachine, www Continue reading Waybackmachine: great research tool

Despite 100 Million IE 7 Installs, Microsoft’s Browser Still Loses Ground

Interesting news for web site owners (everybody!) – Firefox continues to grow market share and the autoupdate install of IE has not changed that share.  Despite downloading it, people are changing their usage patterns. While Microsoft had the WebSideStory numbers correct, it didn’t tell the whole story, says Geoff Johnston, an analyst with the Web metrics company. “[The growth of IE 7] seems to be exclusively at the expense of IE 6,” says Johnston. “It’s not eating into the Firefox share at all. YouTube – video marketing – its not easy (Obama)

Simple evidence that social marketing is not easy, and people must need to want to see it.  Its all about the customer.  The story about Obama’s approach using online video is bigger news than the video itself.  Here is one sample – note the number of views. Update; the role of email for Banks

email and its role hit me twice in the last few minutes, so thought I would update the things I have seen lately.  William over at VanCity asked about the role of email. I don’t pretend to know it all, but the reading and examples I have seen, point to email as a relationship tool. Pertinent communication that is useful to the receiver. Anything marketing related at all should still meet those criteria, but always with the opt in/out preferences in the hands of the customer. I’ll do up a post with the links I have seen on this, including … Continue reading Update; the role of email for Banks
