Bank Technology: modify or replace?

This article summarises the technology dilemma that all Banks face.  I look at ING, and I recall them buying Sanchez back in the 90’s, and how that courageous decisions has simply paid off in spades.  Here is another example. By adding the Profile core banking platform from Fidelity National Information Services, ING is able to leverage “a lot of built-in functionality, including replication, journaling and security,” Wolfs relates. “It also delivers amazing speed to deliver a fast customer experience in real time.” Profile also integrates ING’s Web and call center, ensuring that all transactions are updated in real time regardless … Continue reading Bank Technology: modify or replace?

Online Banking Report: Why "My Spending Report" trumps free bill pay

This new report picks up on directions led by the likes of Wells Fargo, that takes online banking right into the core space that was once dominated by Personal Finance Managers (PFM) such as Quicken, and Microsoft Money. This report looks at the more advanced personal finance features largely ignored by banks so far, including: categorization, sorting, reporting and long-term storage have largely been ignored by banks. BankNet 360 – Big Blue Creates ‘Bank of the Future’

This is pretty far out stuff.  IBM have built a $250 million Bank of the future in Singapore to illustrate the technological future for Banks.  The facility includes a surveillance system that monitors how much time customers spend in different sections of the branch and to what extent they are viewing product displays, biometric authentication devices that recognize users through the veins in their fingers, and automated teller machines that take deposits and recycle the cash for dispensing. Pew Internet: Future of the Internet 2020

This will be a longish post, so hang in there.  This is not just my favourite topic, its core to everything associated with the web lifestyle.  Simply put, where is all this going, and should we care.  This report is 115 pages long, so I have focused on two points for the future: intelligent agents privacy PEW always provide great insights, and their “Future of the Internet” series is valuable.  Its worthwhile noting this report is based on interviews with Internet insiders, but for me that makes it the more useful.  Its worth noting the results are assembled points that … Continue reading Pew Internet: Future of the Internet 2020

final design changes

I am finally finished with design changes. This one is a modified version of a new WordPress theme, ‘cutline’. I feel its closer to the clear, easy to read, professional look that I was hoping for. I’ll let this run for a while, until I get the feeling that this is working for everyone. I liked that last one (silver is the new black), from a design perspective, but somehow the colours were not working for me. Continue reading final design changes

Techcrunch » Exclusive: Mysterious Paypal Secure Storage

Techcrunch scoop a new service coming from Paypal.  In effect its an online safety deposit box. The new service, called DropBox, creates a secure storage area that is associated with the account. What we are not sure about is if this is a service just for merchants, or if it is a service that will be open to every user – from what we have seen so far it seems this is more of a service for merchants. The Ambassador from the Next Economy

Courtesy of Laurent, a remarkable bio on Joi Ito, whose role at age 39 is difficult to define.  He is something of a venture capitalist, yet he doesn’t seek money.  He is interested only in furthering the right tools to move the Internet economy and philosophy ahead.  In this milieu, Mr. Ito, at age 39, has become one of the most visible global defenders of the idea that commerce and community can be designed to mutually reinforce each other. He argues that the great businesses of the Internet will not be those that stream canned video or data, but those that bring people together … Continue reading The Ambassador from the Next Economy
