Royal Bank of Canada is having similar issues ( to Citibank ATM breakdown)

This just gets worse. The common thread, seems to be Visa and international network connections – but this Royal Bank problem takes us back to fraud. It says that 65,000 cards have been compromised and cancelled by the issuers. As asked here, "So what’s really going on? Is there a security breach or a vendor issue?" Given there are now two Banks involved, I would suggest there must have been a compromise at a payment / acquirer centre, probably in the US, and there will be more Banks involved before this is over. More to come! Massive Citibank Alert: UPDATE … Continue reading Royal Bank of Canada is having similar issues ( to Citibank ATM breakdown)

Banks beware – Paypal is starting to wake up

After being purchased by eBay and focussing that auction market for several years, Paypal is getting back to its roots.  Banks should worry about this. Third Screen: PayPal goes mobile – Mar. 6, 2006 “It’s reasonable to think that PayPal will be offering mobile payment services through mobile devices and text messages to its customers,” says Schatt. “It’s a logical extension to what they do, and they’re well-positioned to do it. They’ve got a secure and trusted payment system which will make it possible to pay on the go.” Unfortunately for Banks and credit card acquirers, this move will disintermediate … Continue reading Banks beware – Paypal is starting to wake up

Massive Citibank ATM failure

More on this story .. turns out there is a claim from Citi officials, that its a technical network problem and not fraud? The problem is confirmed as affecting access in Canada, UK, and Russia. Yet the Boing Boing story was referring to customers having to have their PIN changed. Seems there is more to this problem, with worldwide Citibank. Citi are not handling this very well … more to come. Relevance to Bankwatch: Banks are judged more on they manage and address problems, and lack of transparency makes it worse. Massive Citibank Alert: UPDATE – Consumerist They’ve known about … Continue reading Massive Citibank ATM failure

ATM Fraud & security – some perspective

That last post which emanated from the Boing Boing piece on ATM fraud cries out for some perspective. Of course everyone gets excited about ATM Fraud, and its terrible when you are personally involved. But then so are airplane crashes. Bad metaphor I know, but stuff happens, and there is stuff you can do as a consumer to prevent it. One of the challenges of the technology banking world, is that everyone assumes technology is perfect, and that any error/ crime/ event is the fault of the technology and the Banks that implemented it. If only that were true.

So with that rant out of the way, on with the ATM fraud story; some fact, case studies, and hopefully some perspective.

Citibank under fraud attack, customers locked out of accounts in Canada, UK, and Russia

This post on the surface, suggests that Citibank is indicating to their customer that compomises on all Canadian ATM's requires them to cut off access to their customers. Aside from how well Citi handled this, I think this it is more plausible that this customer used a machine at a specific ATM location that had some fraud perpetrated. I am not aware of any situation where an entire country is under suspicion as the article seems to suggest. I know the customer is frustrated, but the issue here is actually broader in many respects – its a worldwide issue and … Continue reading Citibank under fraud attack, customers locked out of accounts in Canada, UK, and Russia

Check out deals on supermarket savings

Fairly detailed update on the competition between UK Grocery stores in the banking space. Profits from Tesco financial arm are quoted at £202m which places them on a level approaching a smaller Canadian bank for example. From my own observation, they (Tesco) do a good job at integrating the financial products with their own at the checkout. It feels natural, and seamless to the consumer, unlike the North American model with banks established within grocery stores. Those do not have the same natural integration, which explains the sporadic success they have there. At this level, the UK groceries are sufficiently … Continue reading Check out deals on supermarket savings

Bankless banking

Intriguing idea here which is a slightly different slant on the disintermediation of banks. When eBay began, there was talk then of auctions playing a role in intermediation between borrowers and lenders. This idea goes further and presumes willing lenders amongst ordinary people seeking better returns on their money. Economist.com | Articles by Subject | Person-to-person finance Catherine Graeber of Forrester Research, a consultancy, is intrigued by the idea, particularly because it might attract 18- to 28-year-olds who need credit and spend hours logged on to social networking sites. These people, says Forrester, are much less likely than their parents … Continue reading Bankless banking

Bankless banking

Economist.com | Articles by Subject | Person-to-person finance

THE internet age was supposed to herald hard times for the middleman. Customers, so it was said, would flock to the web to buy products and services faster, cheaper and more transparently than in shops or through intermediaries. Disintermediation has indeed come about, as any out-of-work travel agent or bookseller will tell you. Yet retail bankersthe middlemen between savers and borrowershave been surprisingly untouched.

Marketing 101 for Banks – time for new approach

We were at the Agency the other day, working on a campaign, and the classic quote came from the general manager of the agency. “the creative deck for the print stuff was two pages;   the creative deck for the web site is 40 pages” Implicit in this statement is a different way to approach bank marketing.  The reason it came up, apart from the obvious number of pages, is the granular thinking in consumer terms only rises to the surface when you begin to consider how millions of people will react to the web pages you place in front … Continue reading Marketing 101 for Banks – time for new approach
