Banks branching out in region

Commerce, whose branches are open seven days a week with extended hours on weeknights, unveiled its first offices in the District and Northern Virginia last year. The company has 378 branches with assets of $40.7 billion as of March, a 28 percent increase from a year ago. Net income for its 2006 first quarter was $77.3 million, about the same as a year ago.

They understand their strategy and are sticking to it.  Its interesting that their NI is flat, either because their costs are high, or the growth they are experiencing is stifling profits, but they will have to correct that.

‘When they have a loan request, they need your attention,” he said. ‘‘We have grown by being very good at what we do.”

Senior citizens are also a key element of Congressional’s client base,
Lane said. ‘‘A lot of banks have focused on online banking and
technology, while many seniors want and deserve our time in a branch,”
he said.

Talented, customer service-oriented employees, the involvement of
shareholders and board leadership have played key roles in
Congressional’s growth, Lane said.
