Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Has Resigned, Army Says

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has resigned, the country’s army chief confirmed in a statement to the nation. He said an interim government would be formed.

Earlier, Ms. Hasina was spotted at an airport in the capital, Dhaka, according to diplomatic officials. She appeared to be heading out of the country as protesters stormed her official residence.

Ms. Hasina had ruled Bangladesh, a country of around 170 million people, since 2009, but she resigned and departed in the face of massive protests.
