While on the one hand banks do not want to miss out on a large market, its clear from the under-noted, that some are dancing on the edge of legal issues by opening accounts for, in effect non-residents. Bank of America CEO continues the dialogue about the option of independence from Visa.  Analysts point out the scale of the MBNA acquisition adds to the estimated 20% of US Visa business owned by Bank of America. American Express and Chase log in is not secure


In an unbelievable story from SANS, they note that American Express and Chase log in is not secure.  I looked at those sites myself and its true.  Recently in the interests of customer usability, banks in the US have taken to offerring log in from the home page, and how they implement this is critical.

At issue are the user log-in areas on sites like Chase.com and Americanexpress.com that ask customers to submit their ID and password information. Although these forms may be encrypted, they do not use authentication technology to prove they are genuine, according to Johannes Ullrich, chief research officer at the SANS Institute.

Interchange fees are under pressure


As merchants complain, and consumers begin to realise the extra charge they are in fact paying to subsidise the interchange fees, its only a matter of time before alternatives arise.

BY Missy Baxter, contributor • Consumer advocates say rising interchange fees are a serious problem, costing cardholders and merchants a total of at least $25 billion each year. Last month, dozens of protestors demonstrated against rising interchange fees outside the Javits Center in New York during the National Retail Federation’s annual convention.

Recently we saw rumours of Bank of America opting out, by creating their own network.  With Banks of that scale this alternative becomes more viable.  Now we see the Fed stating they will stay out of it, meaning they won’t regulate.

Relevance to Bankwatch:
Interchange fees and the financial model for payments will be a new frontier for banks to re-invent aspects of their business.

NACHA’s payment pilot to launch in early ’07


Pilot timing details are becoming clearer. NACHA’s payment pilot to launch in early ’07 | ATM Marketplace News NACHA’s long-expected pilot project to test Internet payments to retailers and billers is expected to launch early next year. The pilot will run for 12 months. NACHA officials expect to sign most participating banks, merchants and billers by Aug. 30, 2006, though the pilot will accept additional participants after that date. Wachovia topped the customer experience rankings; Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Wachovia, and Bank of America all topped the Web excellence scorecard.

They conclude that speed, reliability and ease of navigation are important. Interestingly, Keynotes core competencies are in measuring those attributes. Obviously these attributes are an important measure, but not the only ones.

Banks whose Web sites are easy to navigate, provide quick and accurate responses, and have solid uptime and reliability are keeping and profiting from customers, according to Keynote System’s “Keynote Customer Experience and Service Level Rankings.”

Branches as a core strategy


Commerce Bancorp of Cherry Hill, N.J which bills itself as “America’s most convenient bank” is branch centric, with 7 day opening. Banks branching out in region Commerce, whose branches are open seven days a week with extended hours on weeknights, unveiled its first offices in the District and Northern Virginia last year. The company has 378 branches with assets of $40.7 billion as of March, a 28 percent increase from a year ago. Net income for its 2006 first quarter was $77.3 million, about the same as a year ago. Checking study: Bank fees still rising


Bankrate announce their annual checking study. The results seem somewhat at odds with another study reported recently. This confirms to me that the first thing to look at with any study is the sponsor, and their motivation.
