Interview – Karl-Matthäus Schmidt | Private Banking Innovation

Alex and the smart folks at Arvetica do a great job of capturing comments from thought leaders in Private Banking.  I met Alex and his colleagues at LIFT earlier this year, and they are doing good stuff. This particular interview rang a chord for me, with comments that can be applied to any Bank model. private banking innovation : Blog Archive : Karl-Matthäus Schmidt, CEO of quirin bank Presents their Innovative Private Banking Business Model The business model of quirin bank can be described in one sentence: we are the first bank in Germany that can honestly and truly call … Continue reading Interview – Karl-Matthäus Schmidt | Private Banking Innovation

Is there a deep shift occurring, where internet becomes “the” channel?

After this post the other day, something has been bothering me. Are we at some kind of crossroads here in the convergence of old style banking, with internet banking? By Internet Banking, I am not thinking of paying bills online and moving money around … the traditional, transactional view of online banking. Is there a deep shift occurring, where internet becomes the channel, with branch and telephone as fall back channels? Brand managment will exclude social networks | Citi « The Bankwatch Citi represent the apparent majority view, amongst Banks, and the antithesis of Wells Fargo, and RBC. What intrigues … Continue reading Is there a deep shift occurring, where internet becomes “the” channel?

Search and advertising, beyond Google

This is a fascinating interview by Scoble with the people from Proximic.  Its hard to follow, but worth the effort, if you want to get a sense of the potential for internet search, and advertising.  Once you get into the demo, after about 10 minutes, their product quality really springs out, and the real value becomes apparent.  Proximic :: Home The Proximic Platform is an open contextual ecosystem to connect publishers, bloggers and end-users by delivering related news, articles, background information and ads in a better way. ‘Give with Us’ – yet another use for blogs | Verity Credit Union

Credit Unions continue to lead the charge with social type activities, and here is yet another, from Verity in Seattle.  I picked this up from Trabian, the people who built this one. Verity are providing a simple forum for local organisations, and people, who want to help, to publish their services.  It also provides for anyone to discuss, ask questions, and post pictures, making it interactive. Verity: Give With Us “Members helping members” has always been the underlying rallying cry of credit unions. Verity Credit Union wanted to take this a step further by creating Give With Us, an online … Continue reading ‘Give with Us’ – yet another use for blogs | Verity Credit Union

Canadian markets exhibit ‘clog in the system’

In a follow up to this Fridays post on the sub-prime situation, it appears that certainly in Canada, the markets remain dysfunctional, as the impact of three record days of liquidity injection by the Bank of Canada, failed to create the desired result. reportonbusiness.com: Third BOC injection in three days reveals ‘clog in the system’ The trickle-down effect does not seem to be functioning.… Banks are reluctant to lend to each other, and credit spreads are abnormally wide as a result, he said. Relevance to Bankwatch: Its clear that the Banks’ have a serious problem, and the degree of the … Continue reading Canadian markets exhibit ‘clog in the system’

American Banker redesigns, and adds a ‘Bankers Blog Watch’

American Banker have redesigned their site, and although the main content remains behind a subscription, they have a free trial available. I had anticipated that they might follow the Economist model, with some articles freely available to all, but apparently not. Nice redesign though. However, I am honoured to have Bankwatch featured in their new blog area, alongside some others, including as Jim, Trey, and a few other well known bloggers. [I guess that makes Trey an honorary banker now] The Banker’s Blog Watch – American Banker Blogs We’re Watching: GonzoBanker Nouriel Roubini’s Blog Javelin Strategy & Research Blog The … Continue reading American Banker redesigns, and adds a ‘Bankers Blog Watch’

Brand managment will exclude social networks | Citi

Citi represent the apparent majority view, amongst Banks, and the antithesis of Wells Fargo, and RBC. What intrigues me about this comment from the Citi CMO is that she must be unaware that the conversations she fears are already taking place online.  Here are a set of examples on Youtube.  My take …. why not embrace the madness, and get out there and join in the conversations.  Find ways to dip toes into the water. MediaPost Publications – Citi Cautious About Advertising On Social Networks – 10/01/2007 She added that allowing consumers access to Citi logos and other materials related … Continue reading Brand managment will exclude social networks | Citi

Signs of credit tightening in Canada

Some insightful remarks about the state of Canadian financial markets, and the impacts of the sub prime mortgage effects on world. My take on the three points: some FI’s are having trouble with market funding some banks are raising significantly higher liquidity, through debt at historically higher rates differentials above government bonds and the kicker … banks are reputedly going to repatriate mortgages back into their balance sheets. This is a strange grouping of facts. This suggests to me that the mortgage securitisation market is drying up, and that banks will have to self fund their mortgage growth, and at … Continue reading Signs of credit tightening in Canada
