BMO and Optionable saga continues to deteriorate

There have been a few more developments reported in the press, in this situation, surrounding the expected loss of $450 million at BMO, as a result of allegedly excessive risky positions in natural gas options. For context that loss represents about 80% of one quarters net income. Executives at Optionable Inc., the New York commodities broker linked to Bank of Montreal’s natural-gas trading fiasco, cashed in stock worth US$27-million days before the Canadian bank received a strongly worded auditor’s report into the activities of its options trading desk. BarCampBank comes to North America, with the next one in Seattle expected later this year, date TBD. The focus is on innovations, and disruptions within the banking world, and has generally been centred in Paris so far, and its nice to see Frederic planning to attend, and he drew my attention to the arrangements. Bank of Stockton (16 branches) introduce Clairmail solution

Clairmail will be announcing implementation of their product with Bank of Stockton, in California. Banks, and the downside to aggressive selling

New study from McKinsey points out the gap in Emotional Quotient (EQ) between Banks and their customers. A big prize awaits companies that can develop deeper and more lasting relationships with their customers. Yet many businesses rely too much on IT and perform poorly on the front line. In particular this point resonates, and supports the points made by Ron here. …. a different perspective by showing how the aggressive behavior of some sales teams at leading North American banks generated negative moments of truth and has conspicuously weakened the reputation of these institutions. This is interesting because earlier in … Continue reading Banks, and the downside to aggressive selling

Chaos, control and balance – much work still to do

During the last two days, two bloggers I respect have posted on the overwhelming nature of social tools. First Scoble (California, US) … …  begged me to join Facebook. I still haven’t, cause I need fewer things in my life, not more. Twitter dramatically took down my productivity (I’ve been spending less time there trying to get things done) and until I have no emails in my inbox I can’t join new things. But I can stand back and admit my awe of what they’ve done in the marketplace. ShiftHappens | did you know?

We have all heard the statement that a weeks worth of the New York Times contains more information than an entire lifetime in the 18th Century.  This presentation is full of those kinds of stats that drive home not just the amount of information, and change, but the rapid increase in the pace of change that we are experiencing.   The best quote for me, is that today’s education systems are preparing students for jobs that do no exist. Enjoy. Presentation on Slideshare. Relevance to Bankwatch: It brings home the importance of fining ways to manage information, and ways to learn … Continue reading ShiftHappens | did you know?

Transumers | implications and opportunities for Banks

During the LIFT conference sessions on “Cities of the the Future” sessions, these trends came up repeatedly – consumers as entrepreneurs (think eBay sellers) and desire to not own everything (Transumers is a new term to me but we can go with that). Thanks for Springwise for this excellent link. New Zealand-based Hire Things, which is currently in public beta, …… Think of it as eBay for renting goods. The company is an enterprising mash-up of two major trends: minipreneurs (consumers turning into entrepreneurs) and transumers (consumers becoming less interested in owning). Enterprise 2.0 apps appear to have their very own "change agent" by their fundamental nature

Dion as usual does a great and highly detailed analysis of Enterprise 2.0 apps and their applicability to large enterprises, such as Banks. As I was reading, I reelected on my own experiences since leaving a big bank, and working with a small, switched on group, where tools are not mandated, and the best simply rise to the top.  If it doesn’t have RSS then blank stares would ensue.  But more importantly, the tools are used to the extent they work.  Everyone in the group uses them slightly differently, and there are no rules, but there are common threads, and … Continue reading Enterprise 2.0 apps appear to have their very own "change agent" by their fundamental nature
