Update to the 1% rule

Some good stats updating the 1% rule that we reported on last year  … click through to Church of the Customer for the whole story. Just 0.16% of all visitors to YouTube upload videos to it, and 0.2% of visitors to Flickr upload photos. That’s according to data shared by Hitwise‘s Bill Tancer this week at Web 2.0 Expo, adding a few sizable blocks of evidence in support of the 1% Rule. But apparently Bill also reported that “4.6% of all visits to Wikipedia pages are to edit entries on the site.” If that’s the case, that’s a new number … Continue reading Update to the 1% rule

High stakes plays to complete ABN Amro merger

The banks involved seem to be narrowing down to La Salle in Chicago as a key component in the merger stakes.  John Varley, Barclays’ chief executive, has received several expressions of interest in La Salle, ABN’s Chicago-based retail bank, including one from Bank of America. BNP Paribas, Wachovia and Citigroup are also thought to be interested in the business, which is worth about £5bn. By selling the American business, Barclays believes it could come close to matching any rival offer for ABN that emerges from a consortium of Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander and Fortis. Netfinance2007 meeting notes – Vancity changeeverything.ca

William Azaroff – Vancity My take:  their site is a branding play, and complements their overall business strategy.  It levers the lower of local, yet is an ideal online vehicle.  Its also a flexible enough platform to provide enormous opportunity for Vancity in the future, provided they maintain the integrity of the community spirit, and no-one understands that better than William. Some comments on Vancity that are relevant before we talk about the social network 2nd most trusted organisation in BC Triple bottom line – fiscal, social, environmental Social network is about brand differentiation, not about product typical bank – … Continue reading Netfinance2007 meeting notes – Vancity changeeverything.ca

NetFinance2007 meeting notes – Verity Credit Union employee blog

These examples were the best part of the meeting for me – First Shari. My take:  this is a unique and powerful effort that gets as close to the Cluetrain as I have seen.  engagement of employees, with each other and with customers, and that was the Cluetrain message.  The openness will bring enormous benefits to all, such as a recent post from an employee that highlighted certain internal customer processes.   I think that was a good thing – either the process is right and will be justified, or its wrong and the CU should change it.  Either way the customers will win.  … Continue reading NetFinance2007 meeting notes – Verity Credit Union employee blog

NetFinance2007 – meeting notes – Prosper

There will be a couple of posts, at least here.  First few will be meeting notes based on what I took from a few of the excellent speakers.  Then I will do one with some analysis. My Take:  Very clear description of the Prosper model.  Prosper brings a combination of the advantages of traditional community markets with capital markets.  Investments as a security class are coming. Open access to consumer credit in a real world fashion, with inherent loyalty that traditional markets (Banks) can never achieve because of the shame (engagement?) factors. Chris Larsen – Prosper: Web 1.0 – Command … Continue reading NetFinance2007 – meeting notes – Prosper

Zopa | US Launch Update — Revving Up!

Just got this email update.  Zopa have upgraded their US launch from California only to all of US.  No dates yet, but clearly something is going on!  This news copied from their email. They hint at some changes to their model too …  awaiting news on that change. You may recall that last time we dropped a note to Zopa members about launch efforts in the U.S., we were planning on launching in California first. That’s all changed. Since then, we’ve developed a way to start by launching nationally instead.  That’s great news for our friends in Iowa. As part … Continue reading Zopa | US Launch Update — Revving Up!

"Brands don’t work the way they used to"

Hat tip to Susan Abbott –  this quote from Jeffrey Eisenberg is highly profound. Brands don’t work the way they used to … Take a look at a company like Starbucks. Can anybody name a major brand, not a brand extension, but a major brand that in the last decade has been created primarily through advertising? Nobody. I’ve never met a crowd that could. If you think of companies like Yahoo and Google and Starbucks and Amazon, these companies have been built by experience and by word of mouth. Marketing doesn’t work the way it used to. Finextra: E-bill payments surpass cheques among Web-connected households

Despite being considered a cheque centric country, US use of electronic bill payment now exceeds cheques, for paying bills. The January 2007 survey of 2018 respondents, which was conducted by Harris Interactive and the Marketing Workshop, shows that online payments made up 39% of the total volume of bill payments among Internet-connected households, an increase of four per cent since December 2005. In contrast, the number of cheques sent through the post to pay bills fell four per cent to 34% of the overall volume.
