Social Network and privacy

There are issues with social networks that can create opportunities for people to observe too much information.  Looking at a couple of specific instances recently, this has really been made clear to me. Especially if you are signed up for social networks, its worth searching for your own name, and ensuring you are comfortable with the results.   Technorati tags: social+networks, privacy Continue reading Social Network and privacy

Maybe Microsoft is changing, but, maybe we are the problem?

This comment late in the article is refreshingly positive about Microsoft.  Its a positive step that they are suggesting a break from old methods that date back many years.  I have sat through requirements sessions that listened to people indicating a need to retain access to Microsoft Mail files.  Folks … time to cut the cord.  The corporate costs are in the billions, when you factor in what Microsoft must do to maintain backward compatibility, not to mention the gyrations your Bank must go through, its just not worth it.  Save those old emails as text for legal storage, and move … Continue reading Maybe Microsoft is changing, but, maybe we are the problem?

Crisis Management | Menu Foods recall tops Zeitgeist

We blogged about reputation economy recently, and the importance of transparency.  This importance is grounded in the reality that you will be viewed, talked about, and have opinions created about you online, with or without you, so better to participate, and work with the participants, in an attempt to set the tone for the reputation you desire. In North America over the last few weeks, Menu Foods had a situation where some rat poison and/ or other dreadfully wrong ingredients were found in their pet food, and the resultant uproar was loud;  everyone loves their pet.  In any event here … Continue reading Crisis Management | Menu Foods recall tops Zeitgeist

NatWest is taken to court over bank fees

The matter of Bank service charges, or fees, is being attacked on the consumer fairness front in the UK.  Although the real cost to banks of bounced payments and exceeded overdraft limits is only around £2.50, controversial charges of up to £39 can be levied on consumers. Over the past few months, thousands of people have threatened their banks with legal action if they refuse to refund money taken in charges. But the banks have always succeeded in settling before claims could reach courts. The Office of Fair Trading was due to rule on the matter last month, but delayed … Continue reading NatWest is taken to court over bank fees

Charles Schwab MoneyWise misses out on a perfect opportunity

When I saw this headline my first reaction for schwabmoneywise was to expect an interactive site that engaged participants in discussion, and interaction. After all, they won’t be kids forever. Schwab MoneyWise will help you teach your teens the fundamentals of finance and money management. So you can raise them with the knowledge to thrive in an increasingly complex financial world. Source: Charles Schwab MoneyWise : Financial Basics Detail The premise is based on, of course, research. The site was developed based on Schwab research showing that parents want help educating their kids about money. Coincidentally, the 2007 Schwab Teens … Continue reading Charles Schwab MoneyWise misses out on a perfect opportunity

Psychographics more important than demographics

Seth makes an important point here in referring to the older baby boomers having some characteristics that have not traditionally been associated with old people, and hence his conclusion.  Psychographics (open vs. closed) are way more important than demographics. Source: Seth’s Blog: Marketing to seniors (open and closed) I would adjust the statement to say that psychographics are essential to understand the impact of demographics, and how to think about the segments, including old baby boomers, otherwise know as “Cranky’s“. The point in my simple view is that methods of assessing demographic shifts must take into account the psychological profile … Continue reading Psychographics more important than demographics

America as seen by Europe

Steph’s comment here is brilliant in its simplicity.  The reference is to Tim O’Reilly’s suggestion for a blogging code of conduct. BBC NEWS | Technology | Weblogs ‘need content warnings’ Sorry, but this sounds so American. Should people wear content warning badges to indicate they might produce strong language? Celebrating PayPal’s ‘centenary’ – Paypal business model analysis

Chris does a fantastic job of outlining Paypal’s history from inception in Dec 1998 (100 months ago).  In particular, the reason it succeeded so rapidly is what struck me here. In fact, although many of us think PayPal displaces banks, it actually enhances banking services as demonstrated by the bank services behind PayPal. For example, PayPal runs through Wells Fargo and JPMorgan’s infrastructures and generates payment transactions through Visa and MasterCard. As a result, the US backers of PayPal from the banking industry are making a mint through the massive volumes of payments that PayPal generates, as are the bank … Continue reading Celebrating PayPal’s ‘centenary’ – Paypal business model analysis

Enterprise 2.0 – current state of use of web 2.0 tools in Banks and Credit Unions

Don puts a positive spin on the McKinsey and other articles regarding Enterprise 2.0, which we covered here … roughly defined (my definition) as the transformation of Enterprise technologies to accommodate Employee to Employee, Customer to Customer, and Employee to Customer interactions. These changes would bring about increased “collective intelligence” than exists today. Don is rightly looking at all firms … I was focussed on the fact that Banks lag, and will continue that theme below. The numbers McKinsey provides from actual business leaders seems to indicate that broad, active interest in collective intelligence is rapidly forming in the offices of … Continue reading Enterprise 2.0 – current state of use of web 2.0 tools in Banks and Credit Unions
