Time to rethink the basis of marketing data

Unfortunately for Alton he wrote this right when the need to turn the traditional paradigm on its head is becoming more and more evident it is easy to forget about the foundation of effective marketing – have an integrated view of your customers and prospects Source: The Marketing Consortium : Developing an Integrated View of the Customer We have been challenging traditional marketing here for while, and very supportive of Forrester’s piece that stated Marketing is in a state of crisis.  We have also looked at CRM and it is in state of crisis, and not delivering on the promise – more here, … Continue reading Time to rethink the basis of marketing data

Final post – detail on a failed attempt by James Kim to hike out

Here is a tragic set of maps, developed by linked from here  and I presume they developed it, but its not clear. In any event the sheer tragedy is in how easy it is to get “turned around” when you are in the wilderness.  I have felt this, and its real.  Look carefully how far the CNET editor walked, went off track, possibly to take advantage of going downhill, or a shortcut, yet to end up so close to where he started.  Note the lodge on the map is closed. http://www.layoutscene.com/james-kim-path/index.html A separate note, but the ability of smart people, and … Continue reading Final post – detail on a failed attempt by James Kim to hike out

Bank of America May Buy Barclays | New York Times

This is speculation in the New York Times, but this would be huge, and create enormous scale.  Barclays have the worldwide coverage in 60 countries, and BofA have a large footprint in the US.  Barclays just purchased a 40,000 employee Bank in South Africa for example. Bank of America is likely to bid for Barclays, the No. 3 bank in the United Kingdom, to further its international expansion strategy, a Merrill Lynch analyst said in a research report Friday. The analyst called Barclays the perfect fit for Bank of America, and suggested that the United States-based bank could pay a … Continue reading Bank of America May Buy Barclays | New York Times

Sun: ‘The world needs only five computers’ | ZDNet UK

This is a fascinating vision for the world of computing.  Its a vision that includes Banks, and that will have enormous implications in the future.  Its a world where computing power is a utility, like water or electricity.  Its available as required. Sound far-fetched?  Perhaps, but if the computer guru’s can pull it off, then why not?  One thing that we do know is that today Banks have similar computing systems, doing similar things, and when you get right down to it, how much strategic difference occurs at the computing level.  differentiation occurs in how you use the system, and … Continue reading Sun: ‘The world needs only five computers’ | ZDNet UK

Doc appears to have an epiphany

Doc seems unusually excited about VRM following IIW where he has been attending.  If he is this excited, we had better watch out! VRM finally delivers the Cluetrain promise Source: The Doc Searls Weblog : Thursday, December 7, 2006 I love the concept.  I have hated CRM for ever as a failed mechanism – technology (CRM) can’t possibly bring individual employees or even self service to a sufficient level to satisfy customers. Anyhow, VRM is defined as the reciprocal of CRM.  Its the customer equivalent, which provides the tools for the customer to interact with vendors/ sellers. This is a … Continue reading Doc appears to have an epiphany

How people buy things – valued advice from people with reputations

How do you keep up?  Information overload.  How do people deal with the variety of information sources, and more specifically, what are the impacts on future marketing?  Chris asks an interesting question about what happens when the “long tail starts experiencing this problem and revolts by abandoning social networks in droves”.  What interests me in this arena is the change to how people purchase. The Cluetrain premise is that people will ignore broad marketing push, and instead, seek out solutions based on peoples and peer opinion, from inside and outside companies.  It has become broadly accepted, that tools such as … Continue reading How people buy things – valued advice from people with reputations

Got Hats? ChangeEverything.ca success story | ChangeEverything.ca

ChangeEverything.ca (social site for VanCity Credit Union) are doing a great job at motivating people into community spirit. The organic growth is amazing, and its local … you can feel Vancouver spirit. Other members of the ChangeEverything.ca community have branched out with initiatives of their own. Grassmonkeyz is collecting items for the homeless to give away on Christmas day. While LocaMichelle is doing a drive for supplies to donate to local animal shelters. I am excited to be a part of ChangeEverything.ca, it felt so good to have the site as a tool to make Got Hats happen. I hope … Continue reading Got Hats? Micro Persuasion: Edelman Debuts StoryCrafter Two-Way Press Release

This is a brilliantly simple new idea that any Bank could easily implement.  Few Banks (only one that I am aware of – BMO)  have implemented RSS feeds for their press releases, but Edelman go much further in redefining how releases ought to be used in the Web 2.0 world. It basically breaks down a press release into its core parts, leaving it up to you – the journalist (citizen or pro) – to decide how it should be put together. Most importantly, every press release gets feeds, tags, del.icio.us/digg buttons, trackbacks and comments. Lloyds TSB – Save the Change, copy Bank of America

Lloyds introduce a top up programme that copies the idea in the Bank of America programme, keep the change.  I have no idea about the patent issues here, but I always thought the BoA idea was brilliant, and if I was Barclays /RBOS/ HBOS Marketing, I would be kicking myself right now!
