In order to understand the profound transformations, and boundless potential, unleashed by artificial intelligence, we need to expand our own intellectual horizons into the realms. The sense of being overwhelmed and constantly listracted is nothing new. Historians anc policymakers should look to the 17th century for guidance on how to grapple with information.. ——————————————– In 1961, the Brookings Institution produced an advisory report for NASA, which pondered, among other things, the societal ramifications of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life. The announcement of such a dramatic … Continue reading Making sense of the AI revolution

The Dark Side of Modernity(Alexander)

In “The Dark Side of Modernity,” Jeffrey C. Alexander critically examines modernity’s contradictory character, depicting it as both a historical period embodying Enlightenment ideals and a social condition marred by suffering and destructive impulses. He discusses how key theorists like Weber, Simmel, Eisenstadt, and Parsons tackled modernity’s dual nature, emphasizing that contradictions should not be resolved but accepted. Civil inclusion and anti-civil exclusion are intertwined, highlighting modernity’s endemic frictions. Alexander advocates for social amelioration through emotional repair and cultural performance, maintaining that acknowledging modernity’s duality fosters realistic approaches to social justice and improvement. The AI National Security Memo and broader evolution of AI inferred

AI National Security Memo followed by MicKinsey memo on evolution of AI usage On October 24, 2024, the White House issued the first National Security Memorandum (NSM) on Artificial Intelligence, marking a significant development in U.S. AI policy and national security strategy[1][3]. This memorandum outlines a comprehensive approach to harnessing AI for national security objectives while addressing associated risks and challenges. Key Aspects of the AI National Security Memo AI as a National Security Priority The NSM identifies AI leadership as a critical national security priority for the United States[1]. It acknowledges that competitors have engaged in economic and technological … Continue reading The AI National Security Memo and broader evolution of AI inferred

The Intelligence Age – Sam Altman

Sam Altman is solidifying his position as a leader in AI and the shift towards to AGI, and ASI (Superintelligence). I must admit I have not seen tangible staps towards AGI indicated from Altman (more on that here coming at Bankwatch) but he is setting the tone and exemplifying the power in that belief which I share and appreciate, given the mantra of this blog. My belief is that AI is stuck in single use siloed basic automation of current processes. The missing and next level will see collaboration between domains of digitisation, physcology, science, expontelly larger language models, and … Continue reading The Intelligence Age – Sam Altman

Productivity growth levels comparable to those seen during the Industrial Revolution through AGI development will likely require extensive interdisciplinary collaboration

Here are some key areas of collaboration that seem necessary, with speculative examples drawing parallels to Industrial Revolution innovations: Speculating further, we might see the emergence of entirely new interdisciplinary fields, such as “AGI-Human Symbiosis Studies” or “Cognitive Economics,” which could drive innovations we can hardly imagine today. The key to achieving Industrial Revolution-level productivity growth will likely lie in fostering a collaborative ecosystem where these diverse disciplines can cross-pollinate ideas and rapidly translate theoretical breakthroughs into practical applications. Interdisciplinary collaboration plays a crucial role in advancing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

The current suite of AI models can generally be categorized as “narrow” in the sense they satisfy a narrow set of related functions, and are closer to advanced digital process automation. Business deployment is heavily focussed on chat functions. Witness this weeks Salesforce results. Their CTO outlined their successes in offering their vision platform to multiple industries and growing rapidly in this lucrative market. but underlying their success is their offering as automated chat and CRM customer case management, recording and processing. AI enhances productivity through human displacement. However I submit their model is hardly transformative to the business model … Continue reading Interdisciplinary collaboration plays a crucial role in advancing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Several key breakthroughs are suggested as necessary for achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI):

Open source research suggests these are areas of LLM development which are holding back real shifts in Gen AI development. Series parts: It’s important to note that there is ongoing debate in the AI research community about which of these breakthroughs are truly necessary for AGI, and whether some might be achieved through scaling existing approaches or require fundamentally new paradigms. The timeline for achieving these breakthroughs and realizing AGI remains uncertain and controversial among experts. Summary of overall Gen AI status

This blog is working toward progress for siginificant productivity gains in business and the economy on a scale which exceeds the Industrial Revolution. A working assumption is the requirement to achieve AGI as a first stepping stone. This series is in 5 parts on the current state of Generative AI, including minimum stepping stones necessary to acheive AGI. AGI will not be achieved through money and investment in technology along; indeed thoughtful and broader investment and collaboration beyond technology and is required. The notion of AGI is often related to development of sentient humans. Sentient is hardly a commonplace word, … Continue reading Summary of overall Gen AI status
