Tucker Carlson’s viral YouTube debate with Jacob Rees-Mogg — recommended to anyone looking for an entirely unedifying way to spend an hour online — pitted two styles of eccentric conservatism against each other. Rees-Mogg’s pantomime of establishment hauteur (enhanced by the interview’s “at home” setting, with its pink damask wallpaper, porcelain objets and gilt picture frames) versus the smarmy country club conspiracism that has made #Carlson one of the most popular broadcasters in America. The encounter will remind viewers how much stranger right-wing politics has grown over the past decade. Rees-Mogg was once unsurpassed as a reactionary oddball; Carlson managed to make him seem almost conventional.
The theme of their conversation was Britain’s support for the conflict in Ukraine but it soon drifted to an older war that is becoming much more interesting to the American right. “Why don’t you tell me the ways Britain benefited from — I’m going to use air quotes here — ‘winning’ the Second World War?” Carlson demanded. “You lost your sovereignty and your self-respect and this beautiful country has been destroyed.” To this, a bewildered Rees-Mogg could only object that Carlson was “verging ”
