Copyright and Artificial Intelligence

Copyright and Artificial Intelligence Published 17 December 2024 Ministerial Foreword Both our creative industries and our AI sector are UK strengths. They are vital to our national mission to grow the economy. This consultation sets out our plan to deliver a copyright and AI framework that rewards human creativity, incentivises innovation and provides the legal certainty required for long-term growth in both sectors. At present, the application of UK copyright law to the training of AI models is disputed. Rights holders are finding it difficult to control the use of their works in training AI models and seek to be remunerated for its use. AI developers are similarly finding it … Continue reading Copyright and Artificial Intelligence

Google Willow

“This week, Google announced Willow, a new chip that in five minutes was able to compute something that our current fastest supercomputer would have taken more time to do than the universe has existed. So immediately, of course, everyone thought, oh no, my Bitcoin. Fortunately though, this new quantum chip is not any good at guessing your wallet seed phrase, and it would apparently take a whole bunch of them specifically programmed to mine Bitcoin, or really to do anything practical so far anyway. But at some point, theoretically, they’re going to be able to steal your Bitcoin, right? Or … Continue reading Google Willow

‘I never see the point of spending money for the sake of it’

By Emma Dunkley Peter Hargreaves does not mince his words. Shortly after arriving at Cafe Murano, a stylish Italian restaurant on St James’s Street in the West End of London, he tells me that he rarely ventures this far for business meetings, preferring instead to make Zoom calls from the comfort of his home in Bristol. “People would say, ‘Peter why don’t you come to London and have lunch in our boardroom?’” He pauses, then says emphatically, “Why the bloody hell do I want to do that? I’d say if you want to see me, come and see me.” I’m honoured … Continue reading ‘I never see the point of spending money for the sake of it’

Bloomberg highlights 2024

In a world where authoritarianism and war are on the march, the fatalists have retreated, shrugging their shoulders in the knowledge that the climate crisis will probably moot everything else. And 2024 was certainly their year. The past 12 months have seen a steady drumbeat of unsuccessful climate negotiations where nations couldn’t put long-term survival ahead of short-term benefit. Talks to halt plastic pollution, protect biodiversity and end desertification all failed. A deal at the COP29 summit left developing nations furious with the amount of money agreed upon to help them battle global warming—and the accord even avoided mentioning the need to move away from fossil fuels. Meanwhile, humanity is burning … Continue reading Bloomberg highlights 2024

Goodbye Berlin

As I pack my bags after nine years in Berlin, I’m leaving a city that seems to be trapped in a narrative of its own decline. Veterans say it has jumped the shark. Flats are impossible to find. Spots in day care are like hen’s teeth. The bureaucracy is mind-numbingly analogue. Gentrification has flattened its anarchic soul. The edginess has gone. Some of this may be true. But it doesn’t reflect my experience. To me, Berlin is at the top of its game, a city that, if it weren’t so self-effacing, could almost be the capital of Europe. null When … Continue reading Goodbye Berlin
