BankerVision: Energy, the economics of abundance, and financial services

I won’t debate this one, because its way out of my league, but I found this statement the funniest one of the week.  Thanks for that James.  Lets see the techie guys sort this one out!  The basic issue seems to be that you can’t get enough energy into a datacentre to simultaneously power all the servers and get enough air conditioning going to keep them all cool. ::HorsePigCow:: marketing uncommon » How I Escaped the Echo Chamber & the Results

This is a powerful post from Tara, that I commend to all bloggers, but especially myself.  Its all to easy to fall into the trap of fuelling fires that are out there, as opposed to starting your own fire.  Maybe its time to uninstall “blogthis”, which is precisely what I just used to refer to Tara’s post.   Hmmmm ;  I sense a New Years resolution coming on!  I too often fall into the trap of linking to a post and using that as a catalyst for a thought meme that I have been fermenting, but why start that way. One day I woke up and … Continue reading ::HorsePigCow:: marketing uncommon » How I Escaped the Echo Chamber & the Results

Tag, I’m it

Ouch … Tara, thanks for the torture.  Seems you have an idea of the last thing this introvert wants to do, is lay out five things about myself that others don’t know.  This is all part of Jeff Pulver’s torture test, of Five Things People Don’t Know About Me game. Here goes: I keep a linkblog on spooks, although its not as up to date as I would like, if I had more hours in the day I just (recently) left my old company (a Bank) and …. more (hopefully) exciting things to come very shortly I love Japan, and … Continue reading Tag, I’m it

S.E.C. Eases Regulations on Business

The NYT notes a significant move by the US Securities regulators, that will bring welcome relief, but it might be to late, considering the effort that has gone on. Responding to criticism that regulators had overreacted to years of major corporate scandals, the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday issued a flurry of deregulatory orders and proposals intended to lower costs to public companies. It said the moves would not reduce investor protection. In a daylong proceeding, the commission proposed a loose interpretation for smaller companies of an auditing provision of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 that has come under … Continue reading S.E.C. Payments News: Treating Payments As A Business Line – December 13, 2006

PaymentsNews refers to a new Tower Group report on why Payments ought to be treated as a business line.  What’s turning payments into a business is competition,” said Kerr. “Managing current customers, while fending off challenges from increasingly vertically integrated competition, is forcing banks to construct business cases for their payments products, rather than considering them as utilities that are parts of larger deals. Source: Payments News: Treating Payments As A Business Line – December 13, 2006 I have been wrestling with this one for 3 years now, and a lightbulb just went off recently.  Its simple … payments should be … Continue reading Payments News: Treating Payments As A Business Line – December 13, 2006

le web 3 – perhaps some are getting a little too serious

This post from Hugh is a balanced sensible view of the conference, that many are saying was taken over by politics. Stowe has some the nitty gritty here. First of all you are in France, so get over it …. have you forgotten that France wanted to create a French only internet, to create a French competitor to Google, etc etc.  You have to love/ hate the French, and its all perfectly ok.  Ces’t la vie.  This is the country that opted out of NATO.  But they have character, and I will still seek France out, not avoid it. So, … Continue reading le web 3 – perhaps some are getting a little too serious

Dodge hints at bank merger support, urges more efficiency in financial system

In the clearest signal for a while, the Governor of the Bank of Canada signalled that mergers would be a good thing for Canada.    Improving efficiency is everybody’s business. Once policy-makers do their job, it is up to the private sector to respond and take advantage of the opportunities to improve efficiency,” Dodge said. Source: Dodge hints at bank merger support, urges more efficiency in financial system My take ….  mergers are good because they shake things up, but … Mergers would be particularly good if a non Canadian Bank came in and bought out a Canadian Bank.  Not for … Continue reading Dodge hints at bank merger support, urges more efficiency in financial system

Final post – detail on a failed attempt by James Kim to hike out

Here is a tragic set of maps, developed by linked from here  and I presume they developed it, but its not clear. In any event the sheer tragedy is in how easy it is to get “turned around” when you are in the wilderness.  I have felt this, and its real.  Look carefully how far the CNET editor walked, went off track, possibly to take advantage of going downhill, or a shortcut, yet to end up so close to where he started.  Note the lodge on the map is closed. http://www.layoutscene.com/james-kim-path/index.html A separate note, but the ability of smart people, and … Continue reading Final post – detail on a failed attempt by James Kim to hike out
